CIRCOLIT®-powder is a synthetic calcium silicate hydrate in the xonotlite crystal form

(6 CaO x 6 SiO2 x H2O)
and as a free-flowing, white powder, it is easily dispersible in organic and inorganic solvents. CIRCOLIT®-powder is multifunctional. It has a rod-like shape and thus provides microscopic reinforcement. A typical property of CSH material and CIRCOLIT®-powder is highly porous when finely dispersed and transfers this property to the finished systems. CIRCOLIT®-powder is temperature-stable as a chain silicate up to approx. 750 °C. At high temperatures, the endothermic isostructural phase transformation to wollastonite occurs – without changing the crystal structure.

Areas of Application

Use in Automotive Applications

The excellent dispersibility of CIRCOLIT® allows for use in both dry mixing systems and kneaders. The high fineness ensures good distribution in the mixture. The high chemical surface activity ensures good incorporation into phenolic resin systems.
The low density allows for weight-oriented formulation, for example, for use in specifically lightweight clutch linings.
The moderate abrasion behavior and thermal stability help stabilize the friction coefficient level even under temperature influence.
The slightly alkaline pH level contributes to the corrosion protection of counter materials in open brakes.

Easy addition to dry and kneader mixing systems
CIRCOLIT® does not tend to form lumps or agglomerates and disperses quickly in the mixing process. These good flow properties and low hygroscopicity allow the use of automatic silo, conveying, or dosing systems.
For open dosing/feeding units with strong suction, powders should be covered, e.g., with coarser fillers or fibers, to prevent material loss.

Use in brake pads for rail vehicles

The excellent dispersibility of CIRCOLIT® Powder - a synthetic calcium silicate hydrate - allows for use particularly in kneaders.
CIRCOLIT® is chemically more active and functional than, for example, MgO or BaSO4 at comparable finenesses, and more thermally stable than carbonates. Compared to Al(OH)3, the cooling effect is lower, but the friction coefficient level is stabilized and not reduced.
The large chemically active surface positively influences the wet friction performance of brake pads.
The endothermic reaction above 600 °C has a cooling effect in the brake pad under high loads. This positively influences wear behavior.
